Student Assessment

All students annually take standardized achievement tests.  Test scores are reported to the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction.

One of the challenges for our district is the development of an assessment system that will systematically gather information from a variety of sources to determine the extent to which our students are achieving the knowledge, skills and understanding described in the Essential Academic Learning Requirements (EALRs).  The Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) and Iowa Test of Basic Skills are a single tool in our effort to measure student learning.

Last spring we tested fourth grade students for the fifth time under new reading, writing and math standards.   Seventh grade students were assessed for the fourth time and tenth grade students were assessed for the third time under the statewide testing program.   Improvement was noted in annual comparisons.

Board members, administration and instructional staff set new goals and adopted strategies to reduce the percentage of students not meeting standards.  We are focusing, not only on effective teaching practices and the skills needed for learning, but also on test taking strategies which will enable students to be better prepared to take a new generation of tests.

If you wish more information concerning testing or test results, please contract Karen Luft or Lupe Ledesma, School Counselors.
