School & District improvement is a continuous process we use to ensure all students are achieving at high levels. All schools can in some way create better environments to insure more students are successful.

During the 2001-2002 school term, Brewster School District voluntarily made application for our middle school (grades 5-8) to be a part of the Washington School Improvement Planning Process. Upon successful application, our leadership team made a concerted effort to expand the improvement process to include grades Kindergarten through grade 12.

Development of our School Improvement Plan was based upon a self-review of our school program. The self-review included active participation and input by building staff, students, parents and community members.

Setting and prioritizing program goals involved decisions and solutions based on careful consideration of multiple sources of data and current research of characteristics of effective schools.

Our successful application has led to a significant number of improvements within the school district.

• Plans of Improvement at the elementary, middle and high school.
• Project CRISS a program which teaches students the skills needed to “learn”.
• A Washington Reads grant for the elementary school.
• Increased parent involvement in our schools.
• Adoption of a new reading program at the elementary school
• Successful grant application for a Math Helping Corp trainer
• Increased instructional time in both reading and math.

We are pleased with the middle school Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) results over the past two years. The percent of 7th grade students passing the WASL in Math has gone from 13.1% to 37.9%. In Reading the rate of success has gone from 19.0% to 39.3%.

Our efforts in the realm of School Improvement have been both numerous and positive. This year the district once again voluntarily applied for and was accepted to have our elementary school (K-6) as a participant in the School Improvement Planning process.

In the upcoming year, our School Improvement Goals include:

• Continued improvement in Reading and Math scores.
• Clear academic expectations at each grade level
• Increased parent involvement
• Continual analysis of test results and adjustments to meet identified student needs.

We are encouraged by the results of our school improvement work and encourage you to contact the school and become an active partner in our efforts.
